Pictures from the Atelier – Magic Scrolls

Tonight, a sneak preview of the magic scrolls:

I had projected that the first lot of scrolls would be ready by February 14. It’s going to be a little longer – getting all the materials here in Mexico has been tough! But we’re on track now… lots of late nights with red wine and potions lie ahead.

This is the draft for a custom ordered scroll. This one will be enchanted for a peaceful family.

The mated pair of swans touch beaks as their children sleep nestled under their wings.

This is a draft in oil pastel. The final will be on handmade paper in specially prepared gouache, pen and ink.

Here you can see two sheets of the handmade paper. I’ve trimmed the edges in two different styles.

On the left is a “natural” edge. I created it by folding and stressing the paper. It makes for a very straight, but still organic edge.

On the right is the treasure map edge. This is made by carefully tearing the paper by hand. It’s wilder and more fringed.

If you want to help spread the excitement about magic scrolls, please tweet or share this post.

Which style edge do you like better?

  1. Wonderful! I love it and agree with your technique and choice of medium and everything. Yay.

Lovely! I would say the choice of edge depends on the context – the purpose of the scroll and the goals of the client – not just an aesthetic choice. For the custom scroll you pictured, I would say family life is untidy. It just is. The “natural” edge would be better suited to containing that untidiness, whereas the “wilder” edge would more embrace that untidiness. Which better suits the recipients?

I love that approach Susan. By the way, welcome to altmagic! I agree that each style of edge will probably go best with different designs/purposes. Maybe I will make a mix… Thank you for the encouragement. As always!

I like the cleaner cut better for practical purposes. When seeing this image, my impression was instantly “love”. I’m a big addict of symbolisms and enjoy interpreting them and learning their associated meanings. So seeing this was fun :)

Thank you Rua! Personally I’ve been leaning toward the cleaner edge too. I think I will keep making the treasure map edge for a select few types of scrolls but mostly use the natural edge. At least for now.
