Mythic Curios

This post can only begin one way:

!

Friend and longtime reader Ty Barbary and partner Jerynn have launched a new website for art + magic, Mythic Curios. Taglined “beautiful, mystical, modern artifacts,” Mythic Curios is worth your time and attention. Why?

Well, for starters, the art kicks a quantum of ass.

Beyond that, the truth in magic movement seems to be growing. Ty writes:

While some magic has been firmly debunked, and some magic has been proven to work, these sigil paintings don’t fall into either category. They’re in that wishy-washy middle ground, the grey lands between yea and nay.

I could argue that, even if the magic doesn’t work – and I can’t guarantee that it will, mind – you’re still paying for a unique, hand-made work of art. Strange, symbolic, somewhat arcane-looking art, but still art. You’re paying for something no one else has had, has now, or will ever have: each sigil painting is unique.

How rad is that? More proof that magicians can be philosophically honest – we have no idea if this stuff works or not – and still produce stirring, imagination-catching, empowered works of art.

You won’t hear this very often from a handmade artist, but: dear customers, if you like sigils and Egyptian gods, go check out Ty + Jerynn’s work and consider supporting their artistic endeavor with a purchase. Sure they’re my competitor in one sense, but more importantly they’re fellow magicians-cum-artists (hehe, u said cum) working miracles on the human mind.

Plus, like, I’m jelly of their technique.

  1. The magic art you create, and the magicians you recommend create, reminds me of the kind of art many, if not *all* magicians create! There should be a specific genre or movement for it, or some kind of gallery… *sighs* If I had the money and resources, and maybe just a big fat lifetime grant that would allow me to support my fellow artist/magus/witches/etc., I’d love to open a little gallery showcasing the best of magical art!

    *dreams*

There is a lot of lovely magic art out there through the ages that often goes unnoticed or hidden. Sometimes I think it a shame, at other times I think it’s a secret for a reason… a very, very special gift only meant for a select few.
