Lookin’ Dapper

There are four scrolls left from the first batch, and I decided they needed a makeover.

Or at least new photos.

All the original scroll images are now replaced with photos taken in better light, and now they show the scrolls mounted on their handmade wooden scroll rods. Not too shabby, scrolls.

Check out the new True Love I, True Love II and Conjuration of Lugh images in the gallery. What do you think? Are the scroll pictures better with the rods, or without them?

  1. I took a long look and a long while before replying to this post, Drew. I *do* like the new photographs. Especially like the new details of the Brigid textures — I didn’t realize the little details in there beyond — getting those close up details gives more of an impression of how the material feels. Nice.

My only suggestion is try using natural, bright daylight with a white background. Experiment with different times of day and different angles. The best photographs I’ve taken of over-sized paintings and drawings were outside on masonite board covered with a white sheet.

Getting the right lighting to capture the amount of detail you want to display can be tricky depending upon what kind of camera you have. Even scanners and copiers can’t capture art enough for my satisfaction (if you remember, I’m hard to please) but you can’t beat a camera that has a lens that duplicates how the human eye sees. However, such lenses are extremely expensive and highly sought after.

That’s why showing one’s work at galleries will never die out. Nothing really beats experiencing art up close in person. What do you think?

Well, for now, back to galleries online… like yours! It may seem a little too much like I am patting you on the back, but I really do like how simple you’ve set up this blog and your gallery. The white space does not distract from the work, in fact it focuses even more on the work. It is clean and orderly, unobtrusive, easy to understand, and doesn’t overload the eye.

That’s a good selling point, eh?

Thank you so much Val, especially for the tips on taking photos. I feel like I finally got the natural light right, taking the photos on a bright but partly cloudy day, when the clouds were over the sun so it wasn’t blown out. But photography is a new skill for me. I’ll have to consider the white backgrounds – I like having texture back there, but maybe it would bring the focus in more.

Thanks also for your thoughtful words about the gallery and blog. I have a question – what do you think of the Scroll Gallery page itself? The layout… I’d rather have something more elegant, but am constrained by the storefront plugin that I use… How’s it look to you?

I personally like it with the rods on as I get to see what the final product actually looks like – which completes it instead of guessing.
